Moving the office

Caretaker’s cottage before renovation

Part of our renovation programme involves moving our office. Currently it resides in the main theatre building, towards the back corner—a space where it has been ever since the building was converted into a formal theatre in 1978. Long-term plans for the property involve moving the administrative and box offices out of that building altogether. Ultimately, we plan to build dedicated spaces for those offices. In the meantime, we are moving the offices into what was originally the caretaker’s cottage.

This was one of the first renovation projects we began. Because we couldn’t anticipate knowing what would be involved in the removal and installation of the air conditioning in the main theatre, and because office work must continue, we decided to renovate the cottage as an interim office area.

By the time we open again for Shakespeare in Paradise, the box office and administrative office will be in this location. The cottage is behind the Black Box. Signage has already been ordered to direct patrons there, so keep an eye out for that!

The cottage has four rooms: a front room, a kitchen area, a bathroom and a back room. Our first job was to outfit the kitchen area to house a washer and dryer as well as cooking and washing facilities. The washer and dryer will be used for costumes, and the cooking area will lay the foundation of our long-range plans to turn this cottage into a concession area for our James Catalyn outdoor theatre when it’s built. The other three rooms are being renovated for use as offices: a box office in the front room, an administrative office in the back.

This involved tiling, upgrading of electrics, and extensive repair and renovation. Below are a couple of photos of that process. Others will follow!
